Group Workshops

The Group Workshops described below provide informed, in-depth information and advice on several types of international opportunities to satisfy the needs of different audiences. A list of Previous Sponsors, Client & Supporter Comments and details on Fees to book a session for your group are provided following the four program outlines.

Paths to an International Career
Volunteer, Academic and Work Opportunities Abroad

Global interdependence in politics, trade and development offers opportunities for graduates, students and educators at all levels. Highly competitive domestic job markets and a growing demand by employers for individuals with the right kind of background to work abroad combine to make international careers topical and timely.

To explore these opportunities, Paths to an International Career identifies the types of positions that exist in government, multilateral and non-governmental organizations, and in the business and academic sectors. The session demonstrates avenues open to individuals to gain experience, improve skills and develop contacts for international work.

Questions are encouraged throughout the presentation. Participants can remain afterwards to satisfy personal inquiries.

Beneficial tools provided to attendees include:

  • A self-assessment matrix to focus personal attributes for overseas opportunities
  • A conceptual framework to structure an international resumé effectively
  • An outline of groups to join for interaction with international representatives
  • A list of key international organizations to contact about jobs

Who Can Benefit from this Program?

Paths to an International Career is intended for university and senior secondary-level students and graduates, counsellors, faculty, and teachers.

Targeting Careers in International Business
Credentials, Strategies, Actions and Contacts

The internationalization of business is evident in the media and in career ads appearing in newspapers, trade publications and online. Paralleling the growth in human resource needs in global commerce is the interest in international jobs from business students, faculty advisers and counsellors. However, expert information is scant to assist young Canadians to prepare for and pursue international work.

Targeting Careers in International Business explains how to develop skills and display credentials to distinguish yourself from others in the international job market. The session identifies strategies and specific activities to improve career prospects. Business opportunities are examined in depth, and information is also discussed on often-overlooked government, multilateral and academic prospects that can provide developmental positions in international business and finance.

Targeting Careers in International Business is intended for university undergraduate and graduate business students, faculty advisers and counsellors.

Introduction to Foreign Service Careers
Positions and Duties, Recruitment Process and Preparatory Advice

Working in the Foreign Service appeals to many bright Canadians at some point in their life. However, misinformation or the lack of information about the career—and about the complex, ever-changing rules of the entry competition—often frustrate people intent on pursuing Foreign Service positions.

To eliminate confusion, explain diplomatic jobs and how to get one, Introduction to Foreign Service Careers covers:

  • The types of officer positions available in Global Affairs Canada (formerly DFAIT and CIDA) and Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (formerly CIC)
  • The structure and activities at home and abroad of the federal government departments and agencies recruiting FS (political trade, development and management/consular), rotational officers, CO, and ES Canada-based officers and FSAA Administrative staff
  • How to prepare academically, avocationally and vocationally to enhance prospects for succeeding in the recruitment competition
  • Essential details on the exam and interview processes

Questions are encouraged throughout the presentation. Participants can remain afterwards to satisfy personal inquiries.

Who Can Benefit from this Program?

Introduction to Foreign Service Careers is intended for high achieving university and senior secondary-level students, university graduates, counsellors, faculty and teachers.

Creating an International Co-op Program
Strategies for Success

Globalization and demand for career-focused education for secondary and post-secondary students are generating interest in international co-op opportunities. Key issues to consider in launching or refining an international co-op initiative include contacts, cost, curriculum implications, monitoring results and—from the outset—a strategic framework to guide the program.

To assist international co-op coordinators, Creating an International Co-op Program covers:

  • Crafting a vision articulating academic strengths and measurable objectives
  • Sources to identify partner organizations and sponsors
  • A matrix process to foster student development by relating curriculum and extracurricular outputs to knowledge and skill requirements of participating organizations
  • Survey techniques to consolidate input from participants to facilitate program responsiveness

Questions are encouraged throughout the presentation. Participants can remain afterwards to satisfy personal inquiries.

Who Can Benefit from this Program?

Creating an International Co-op Program is intended for co-op educators and corporate co-op contacts.
