Coaching for FS-02/03/04 & AS-04/05/06 Ability Tests

The FS-02/03/04 and AS-04/05/06 Ability Tests have been used in DFATD (formerly DFAIT) since 2007 in many competitions. Typically, the opportunity for a candidate to take a test is preceded by an application screening process and followed by an interview. Each of the tests is virtually the same in format and structure, but differs in terms of its competencies and the substantive scenarios used which reflect a mix of issues at headquarters and at post that are similar to situations FS or AS officers at different levels might encounter. Candidates are given little information about what to expect on their test, and advice from peers with past test experience is anecdotal and piecemeal.

To provide a comprehensive picture of the requirements and improve your performance, our FS-02/03/04 and AS-04/05/06 Ability Test Coaching explains the genesis, structure and evaluation of the tests, and provides proven techniques to help assimilate information quickly and respond effectively in a manner that produces favourable test results.

Personal Coaching Program

The 5.0 hour personal coaching entails pre-work—where we tailor materials provided for your particular test and review your CV/resume to look for potential strengths and weaknesses related to the exercise—followed by two in-person or telephone meetings covering the test process thoroughly. You will receive:

  • An overview of Ability Test requirements, and a restructuring of the competencies in play to understand their usage
  • Instruction on the underlying principles and “ideal world’ informing the tests
  • An explanation of test format and materials, plus tips on how to organize the information and manage your time
  • Helpful tools to apply, including a stakeholder framework and theme consolidation matrix
  • Formulas to structure answers quickly to situational questions and to develop specialized written components
  • A method showing how to reflect competencies in responses to raise your score
  • A walk through of sample situations used in previous testing and a review of your draft answers

Who Can Benefit from the Coaching?

We have coached individuals in the FS and AS groups for these Ability Tests since their inception—including first-time and previously unsuccessful candidates—with a high success rate. Many clients are referred to us by individuals already in government who we have helped obtain entry-level positions or advance in other promotion exercises. In DFATD and CIC alone, over 800 officers at various levels up to ADM at headquarters and Head of Post positions abroad have used our services, many on more than one occasion. In other departments and agencies ranging from PCO and Treasury Board to line departments we have helped thousands more public servants advance their career. All information about our clients is kept confidential.

Why Use Our Services?

We are the only career coaching firm that specializes in helping candidates understand and advance in government, multilateral organization and international NGO hiring and promotion competitions—from entry level to executive level.

No service offered by government, universities or the private sector—past or present, in North America or abroad—matches the expertise we have developed or the placement record we have achieved over the past 25 years. The success rate of our clients in institutional hiring and promotion processes attests to the quality of our training.
